Leather tanning is the preservation of the skin so that it does not rot and can be processed into a consumer item such as bridles, saddles, shoes, belts, etc.

There are several ways to tan leather.

From the beginning of the 19th century, tanning is done with chemicals, with the material chrome. This is a much faster way of tanning than was usual before. Due to the strict environmental requirements, almost all chemical tanning companies in Europe disappeared around 1970. Unfortunately, this chemical tanning has moved to countries such as China, India, Pakistan and Morocco where the environment and well-being of employees are not so important.

All the ECO leather that Montar uses is naturally tanned in Europe. This natural tanning takes 12 to 14 months and takes much longer than traditional chemical tanning. Naturally tanned leather is still very limited, but in Montar's eyes it is the future with regard to horse welfare and the environment. The advantage of natural tanning is that no residual chemicals are ever left behind in the leather. These residual chemicals can cause skin problems, among other things. In addition, the environment is much less burdened with natural tanning than with traditionally tanned leather that uses chemicals.

Montar's ECO leather feels very supple and, with proper maintenance, has a longer lifespan than traditionally tanned leather.
