Frequently asked questions about livestock
About cattle, sheep, goats and poultry
When is tupping season for sheep?
Sheep mainly come into season in autumn, as the days get shorter. With a raddle harness and crayon on the ram, the colour on their backs shows you which ewes have been served. Change colour after about 17 days so you can see which ewes return.
Why should I hang a cow brush in the barn?
Cows love to groom themselves. A cow brush helps keep the coat clean and provides comfort, especially when the animals are housed. Hang the brush where the animals can easily reach it, without it being in the walkway.
How often should I trim my cows’ claws?
Claws are usually functionally trimmed twice a year, for example before housing and before the grazing season. In between, check regularly that your animals are walking well, and call in a foot trimmer or vet if they go lame.
How do I hang a heat lamp safely?
Always hang the lamp securely on a chain and away from straw and other flammable materials. Use a suitable fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Watch how the animals behave: if they huddle close together under the lamp, it’s too cold. If they lie far away, it’s too warm.
How do I stop my chickens’ drinking water from freezing?
Place the drinker somewhere frost-free, for example inside the coop, and refresh the water daily. In severe frost, you can use a heated base. During frost, check a few times a day that your chickens can still drink.
How can I mark my livestock?
For temporary marking, for example after a treatment or during breeding, use marking spray or a marking stick. Collars and number tags are useful for identification within the herd. This marking does not replace official ear tags or registration.
