Frequently asked questions about the stable and stable equipment
About the stable and stable equipment
How do I stop the drinker from freezing?
Insulate water pipes and use a heating cable with a thermostat or a heated drinker. During frost, check every day that the water is still flowing, and keep a bucket handy as a backup.
Why should I use a hay net or slow feeder?
With a hay net, your horse eats more slowly and spread over a longer period, which better suits its natural way of eating. You’ll also waste less hay. The smaller the holes, the slower your horse eats.
How often should I muck out the stable?
Remove droppings and wet patches every day. How often you fully muck out depends on the bedding and how many hours your horse spends in the stable. Make sure there’s good ventilation too.
What helps against flies and pests in the stable?
Remove manure regularly and store feed in well-sealed bins or containers. Fly traps and fly bags reduce the number of flies, and traps or bait boxes keep mice and rats away.
How do I set up a practical tack room?
Give every saddle its own saddle rack and every bridle a hook, and hang rugs on a rug rack so they can dry. Keep the room dry and ventilated so the leather doesn’t go mouldy.
What can I do about boredom in the stable?
Horse toys, a treat ball, a lick and a hay net keep your horse occupied. Turnout, exercise and contact with other horses remain the most important things, though.
