Time for turnout rugs

Wet fields and cold nights: a good turnout rug keeps your horse dry without making it sweat underneath. Start with 0g or 50g and switch to 100g to 200g when it freezes. Want to get through the whole season with one outer rug? Choose a rug with a liner system and simply swap the inner layer. We ship our best-selling turnout rugs the same day.

All about horse rugs, by season and by use

Which rug your horse needs depends on the weather, whether your horse is clipped and whether it is stabled or out in the field. Below are the main types of rug with a short explanation, so you can quickly make the right choice.

In the field: turnout and winter rugs

A turnout rug of 0g to 50g keeps an unclipped horse dry in autumn. In frosty weather or if your horse is clipped, choose a winter rug of 100g to 400g. A neck cover also protects the neck against rain and cold.

Liners and under rugs

With under rugs and liners you turn one turnout rug into a rug for the whole season. You clip the liner into the turnout rug and only swap the inner layer when it gets colder or warmer.

In the stable and after riding

In the stable you use a stable rug, which is lighter and more breathable than a turnout rug. After riding or washing, your horse dries off quickly under a cooler or fleece rug.

While working

An exercise sheet keeps the muscles warm while walking and cooling down, even in the rain. For the horse walker there are special horse walker rugs, and for extra muscle support choose a therapy rug.

Summer and insects

In spring and summer, fly rugs protect against insects, and fly rugs with a waterproof back also keep your horse dry in a shower. For horses with sweet itch there are sweet itch rugs. Also take a look at summer sheets and fly exercise sheets.

Special rugs and care

For competitions you will find show rugs, and for young horses foal rugs. With rug accessories such as rug wash, reproofer, snap hooks and tail cords, your rug will last longer. Shop all horse rugs.

Frequently asked questions about horse rugs

Choosing and caring for rugs

Which turnout rug does my horse need in autumn?

For an unclipped horse, a turnout rug of 0g or 50g is usually enough in autumn. It keeps out rain and wind without being too warm. If your horse is clipped or the temperature drops below 5 °C, choose 100g to 200g fill.

What is a liner and when do I use one?

A liner is a separate inner layer that you clip into a turnout rug. With one turnout rug and three liners (100g, 200g and 300g) you are covered for the whole season. That is cheaper and more practical than three separate rugs, and you only need to wash and reproof one turnout rug.

How do I measure the right rug size?

Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the horse, to the back of the hindquarters. The length in centimetres is the rug size, for example 195 or 205 cm. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

My rug has torn in the middle of winter, what now?

First check whether a repair is worthwhile: a tear in the outer fabric can often be patched with a repair kit from our rug accessories. If the rug is worn out, we keep the common sizes of our best-selling winter rugs in stock all season.

How do I wash and care for a horse rug?

First brush loose dirt and hair out of the rug. Wash the rug at a low temperature with a special rug wash and do not use fabric softener, as it damages the waterproof layer. Let the rug air-dry and reproof a turnout rug after a few washes.

How do I know if my horse is too warm or too cold?

Slide your hand under the rug behind the withers. If it feels damp or hot there, the rug is too warm. If it feels cool, a thicker rug or liner may be needed. Cold ears alone tell you little: the temperature under the rug is the best indicator.
