How does a sensitive stomach develop in horses?
A horse's stomach constantly produces stomach acid to help digest food. Saliva neutralizes the acidic stomach juices. A horse only produces saliva by chewing. If the stomach is empty for a long time or if little saliva is produced, the stomach acid can damage the stomach lining, which is very painful. Stress also affects the stomach. Stress causes reduced blood flow to the stomach lining, making it even more sensitive to stomach acid. It is therefore important to prevent stress and that horses can eat small amounts throughout the day so that sufficient saliva is produced.
