Determine soil acidity with the pH Soil Test. Besides having a grass variety suitable for horses, healthy soil is also very important. Soil acidity has a major impact on soil life and the horse pasture. An acidic soil makes it harder for grass to absorb nutrients. As a result, the grass in the horse pasture grows less well and becomes more susceptible to diseases, pests, and weeds. Therefore, test the soil acidity of your horse pasture once or twice a year. The optimal pH of a horse pasture is between 5.5 and 6.5. You can easily measure this with the Vitalstyle pH Soil Test in collaboration with ECOstyle! What is pH? Soil acidity is measured as pH. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. In soil, the acidity ranges from approximately 4 to 8. The lower the pH, the more acidic the soil.
The importance of a good pH
The pH has a major influence on soil life and the horse pasture. An acidic soil due to weather conditions and soil processes causes grass to absorb nutrients less effectively. As a result, the grass in the horse pasture grows less well and becomes more susceptible to diseases, pests, and weeds. It is therefore important to test the acidity of your soil once or twice a year. The optimal pH of a horse pasture soil is between 5.5 and 6.5. The optimal soil acidity for a herb and/or flower mixture is between 6 and 7. Is your soil too acidic? Then use Vitalstyle WeideKalk!
Is the soil too acidic?
Vitalstyle WeideKalk is specially developed for horse pastures. Its unique composition optimizes soil acidity. With WeideKalk, you ensure the correct soil pH in your horse pasture, which improves the growth of pasture grass and prevents the growth of unwanted weeds such as moss, horsetail, and sorrel. WeideKalk is only absorbed by the soil when the soil is actually too acidic. The granules can remain visible and active for a long time. It's a good idea to leave your horse in the pasture before the WeideKalk has fully dissolved.
Is the soil ready for fertilization and seeding?
For a strong horse pasture, fertilizing with Vitalstyle WeideMest is recommended. This 100% plant-based organic fertilizer is specially developed for horse pastures and ensures balanced growth with a lower fructan content. The unique blend of bacteria, fungi, and protozoa promotes healthy soil life, a strong horse pasture, and helps prevent weeds in the pasture. Horses can return to the pasture immediately after fertilization with WeideMest.
By overseeding the horse pasture with Vitalstyle Meadow Grass Seed, you add diversity to the pasture. This balanced mix of grass seeds is ideal for horses due to its low fructan content. With WeideGrasszaad you ensure a biodiverse and healthy horse pasture!
Instructions for use
Measure the acidity in several places in the horse pasture to be able to draw a good conclusion.
Fill the test tube with 1 cm of soil.
Add 2.5 cm of the supplied distilled water.
Add a sachet of test powder, close the test tube with the supplied cap and shake until the contents of the tube are well mixed.
Tip: make a small funnel from paper so that you can easily pour the powder into the test tube.
Set the test tube aside for 5-7 minutes until the soil has settled and the liquid turns a clear color.
Compare the resulting color with the colors on the packaging and determine the pH value of the soil.
