Summer eczema drives a horse - and its owner - insane. The terrible itching is caused by an allergic reaction to the bite of a small insect: a small stinging mosquito, also called knut. The Latin name for these stinging mosquitoes is Culicoides. The allergic reaction to the gum saliva, which remains in your horse's skin after the bite, can lead to serious skin irritation in your horse.

The itch makes your horse want to scratch: it will rub against everything loose and stuck to get rid of that frustrating itch. Often it will sand until the skin breaks. The skin can thicken in those places and in severe cases a skin infection can develop. Summer eczema often occurs in the mane and tail root, but can also occur in other areas of the body. Robust, austere horse breeds are especially susceptible to summer eczema.
