How System 2 works: Pressure on the nose

General:

Horses naturally react reflexively to pressure on their nose, every horse stops&nbsp: an aid exerted by pressure on the nose. A well-known model is the continuous, stiff noseband that Indians have used for centuries and is known as Bosal. In addition to the Bosal, the Hackamore with its leverage is also a well-known restraint.

Construction:

A bosal brim consists of three parts, the stiff noseband that hangs from the cheek piece and runs freely behind the chin, and a continuous rein that is attached to the end of the noseband with a special knot. This continuous rein is called a mecate. This is quite long, the part that does not serve as a rein is simply attached to the saddle pommel or the rider's trousers as a lead rope. The single noseband is the Bosal, together with the Mecate and cheekpieces it is called Bosal Optoming. The noseband is often made of braided cowhide, the mecate of hemp or horsehair and the cheekpiece of leather. The materials used for this trim can vary greatly.

A Hackamore brim exerts indirect pressure on the nose via the rein aids through leverage. The thighs hang down from the cheek piece and nose and&nbsp: The chin strap or chin chain is attached in line with the scissors. Depending on the type of scissors, the rein connection varies. It is the wide variety of scissor types that makes it possible to choose a gradation of the desired pressure.&nbsp:F.R.A.&reg:&nbsp:offers&nbsp: a very large range of complete brims and nose pieces with or without scissors. In addition to various leather variants, you will also find a cotton variant.

Location:

A bosal and the noseband of a hackamore should rest on the hard part of the nose, just like the nosebands of other bitless brims.

Effect:

If we focus on the bosal (i.e. the continuous stiff noseband itself), opening the Mecate to the right puts pressure on the entire left side of the nose piece, leaving the right side completely free. The Bosal therefore works with a perfect level of discrimination and therefore offers very good clarity. This pressure will cause the horse to give way and turn to the right. E.a. is achieved by centrally attaching the Mecate to the underside of the rigid, continuous free noseband. It goes without saying that opening the Mecate to the left has the opposite effect. When the horse, with the help mentioned above, applies the opposite part of the mecate to the neck, he perceives this as a stimulus that combines with the pressure exerted on the side of the nose. This phenomenon is called “neck restraint.” (literally: send neck)&nbsp: The symmetrical questioning of the Mecate also leads to a very good distinction. The free bosal only exerts pressure on the front of the nose, which is translated into adhesion signals. Direct release immediately reduces the amount of help provided.

With the Hackamore, the backward pressure on the nose is influenced by the leverage. Tilting the scissors simultaneously exerts downward pressure on the chin and neck. The rider doses his rein aids on the left and right to achieve the desired pressure and thus the desired reaction. It goes without saying that the level of pressure and transfer depends on the type of scissors and the rider's hand.

Permission:

With bosal optimization, the construction of a&nbsp: Refined, very clear communication possible. This improvement provides very good discrimination signals and the&nbsp: Experienced riders will become comfortable with this bitless brim in a relatively short amount of time. In general, the optimization offers good&nbsp: Possible uses for sensitive horses and especially when breaking in young horses. Bosal and Mecate were traditionally used by the Indians and are of Spanish origin.

Using a hackamore optic, especially one with high leverage, requires a good driving experience. Due to the noise generated by the simultaneous pressure on the chin and neck, only experienced riders are able to correctly dose their nose aids.
