About the ingredients
The polyunsaturated fatty acids can be subdivided into two major families: the omega-3 family (alpha-linolenic acid) and the omega-6 family (linoleic acid group). Because the animal body can not make these fatty acids themselves, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids must be introduced through the feed or supplementation. These essential fatty acids were also called vitamin F. In the twentieth century, the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids was shifted into the nutritional strength in the direction of omega-6 fatty acids. The increasing use of vegetable oils and fats, rich in omega-6 fatty acids, stimulates the formation of arachidonic acid at the expense of EPA and DHA. Arachidonic acid itself is abundantly present in Western food. It is estimated that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the western diet is about 20-25: 1. Researchers suggest that a ratio of about 5: 1 is more desirable. Evolutionally, the dog (and its precursors) have consumed millions of years of omega-6 and omega-3 in a ratio of (probably) 1: 1. The enzyme delta-6 desaturase controls both the conversion of linoleic acid to DGLA and the conversion of ALA to (eventually) EPA. With an excess of linoleic acid, ALA can hardly use the enzyme, and thus hardly any more EPA and DHA is formed. This enzyme is already the slowest step in the chain and its enzyme activity is also inhibited by many factors in the diet (eg trans fatty acids, saturated fats, zinc deficiency, magnesium and / or vitamin B6, alcohol) and metabolic factors ( hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, certain medicines). This means that in our Western society many animals themselves can hardly form GLA and EPA, and that these fatty acids must therefore be fed through the diet.
Dosage
- Optimal dosage is applied 1x daily.
- Dog: 1-3 capsules.
- Cat: 1-2 capsules.
- slowly build up dosage
Administration
For oral use. Can be given directly in the mouth, in a piece of bread or in some sweets. For optimal results, this natural product should be absorbed by the clean oral mucosa. Therefore, give it at least half an hour before or after feeding. In an acute situation, the dose may be increased on the advice of a veterinarian. In case of administration of Omega-3 oil, thin stools may occur in the beginning. Slowly build up.
Duration of treatment
Omega-3 fatty acids are incorporated into the cell membranes. This is a process from a few days to two weeks. The effect is usually visible after 1 to 3 weeks. After reduction of complaints, a maintenance dose can be transferred. This is usually half the indicated dosage on the package. When dosing this product, look carefully at the animal's response. Initially, a higher dose may be required, this product can be given safely in a double dose. Reduce dosage gradually as the symptoms decrease or disappear to the lowest possible dose. This product can be permanently given in case of chronic complaints.
Storage advice
Store in the refrigerator after opening. Under the influence of light and oxygen, the activity of the polyunsaturated fatty acids may decrease. Keep out of reach of children.
Synergy and combinations with other products
This product can be used without any objection in combination with other natural health products and regular medicines.
Because omega-3 fatty acids have the ability to resist blood clotting, in animals who use blood thinners, they may have a deficiency of vitamin K or other medicines that inhibit blood clotting (aspirin), internal bleeding when high doses of omega-3 fatty acids are used (more than 5 grams of EPA DHA). In these cases, it is recommended to adjust the dose. The effect on blood clotting by omega-3 fatty acids is maximal after 6 weeks of treatment.
Contraindications
In the indicated dosage no contraindications are known.
Side effects
When using high doses of fish oil (more than 5 grams of EPA DHA) there is a risk of thin stools.
