Roughage: A Hidden Source of Mycotoxins
Everyone has seen a bale of roughage covered in mold, and (hopefully) you know not to feed it to your horse. Unfortunately, mold isn't always visible and can be anywhere: in hay, stable bedding, or even in concentrates. These molds produce toxins called mycotoxins, which can be invisible and odorless. Without you even realizing it, your horse can ingest these substances through its feed or by inhalation.

Test your roughage!
Sometimes you see or smell mold on hay, straw, or in the stable. But often, mold is invisible, even though the harmful toxins are present. Do you see a moldy spot? Remove it thoroughly, because mycotoxins are often also present around the moldy spot. Do you see a lot of mold? If so, it is best to throw away the entire bale of roughage or bedding.

Note: Pavo ToxiSave can help limit the damage of mycotoxins, but it is not a long-term solution for feeding poor-quality roughage or using contaminated bedding.
