At high temperatures or during heavy exertion, a horse sweats a lot. A horse also loses a lot of electrolytes through this sweat. Electrolytes regulate the fluid balance in the body and are important for energy management, pH balance, muscle tension and relaxation, and signal transmission from the brain and nervous system. The body cannot produce these electrolytes itself, but must be obtained from food and drinking water. During prolonged exertion, a horse loses significantly more electrolytes through sweat than can be replenished through normal feed. In these cases, it is important to provide the horse with additional electrolytes.
