You may already have heard of Mips®, the Swedish invention that has enabled a significant step forward in helmet safety. If not, you have probably seen the yellow logo: a safety badge worth looking out for when choosing a riding helmet! And maybe even noticed a yellow shell, located on the inside of a helmet, just beneath the comfort layer.
This is, in fact, an innovative extra safety feature, designed to improve safety in all equestrian sports, by creating an additional barrier of protection between you and potentially serious outcomes, should an accident occur.
This is how it works:
Mips® safety system consists of a low friction layer that can move slightly, independently of the helmet. This adds a certain elastic quality to the helmet; a little extra room for the head to move, no more than 10-15 mm. But this small margin can make a major difference when you really need it.
A standard riding helmet protects the head by absorbing the energy of a hard hit. The shock is spread through the material and distributed over the helmet. The helmet might break, but the head will be protected! Any high-quality helmet will perform well in tests simulating impacts head-on against the helmet.
But in real life, the only place where things really matter, a blow to the head will rarely be linear, well balanced, and straight forward. Instead, the forces will hit you from an angle, and make the head jolt violently. And here is where Mips® can make a difference.
In the event of an oblique blow to the head, Mips® safety system can absorb and redirect some of the rotational forces created by the impact. This enables the system to somewhat compensate for the stresses that result from abrupt, forceful motion. Thanks to these qualities, Mips can help mitigate the consequences of an accident.
By allowing for minimal shifting of the skull in the direction of movement, Mips® helps protect the brain from the rotational kinetic energy (energy of motion), to which it is most vulnerable.
Back on Track and Mips®: a long history, intertwined
Back on Track and Mips® are both Swedish companies driven by innovation and pioneers in safety. Back on Track's riding helmets have always been equipped with Mips® safety system, ever since we started making helmets.
Early in our respective companies' history, our ambitions came together and resulted in the first ever riding helmets fitted with Mips®. Since then, we have created a range of riding helmets for all types of riders and disciplines: always with a focus on safety, our absolute most fundamental value. Safety guides everything we do, and we have long worked to increase safety awareness within the equestrian world.
Now, we are proud to present a new generation of exquisite riding helmets - as safe as we can make them, updated with new features and certified to the latest standards. And naturally, they are all equipped with Mips® safety system.
