During high temperatures or intense exercise, horses sweat heavily. Through sweating, horses also lose significant amounts of electrolytes. Electrolytes regulate the body's fluid balance and are important for energy metabolism, pH balance, muscle contraction and relaxation, and signal transmission within the brain and nervous system. The body cannot produce these electrolytes itself; they must be obtained through feed and drinking water.
