Everything for the rider, by season and discipline

What you need as a rider depends on the weather, your discipline and whether you're training or competing. Below are the main categories with a short explanation, so you can quickly make the right choice.

Breeches and belts

Breeches are the foundation of your outfit. Knee grip gives freedom of movement when jumping, while full grip gives extra hold in the dressage saddle. Prefer something soft and close-fitting? Then choose riding tights. Finish it off with a matching belt.

Tops by season

In summer you ride in a breathable shirt or polo. In spring and autumn a jumper, cardigan or gilet comes in handy, and in winter a waterproof riding jacket. With a hat, scarf and warm riding socks you'll stay comfortable in the outdoor arena too.

Boots and shoes

Choose between tall riding boots or jodhpur boots with half chaps. For work around the stable, yard boots, wellies and outdoor shoes are more practical. Keep your leather supple with saddle soap and other care products.

Safety

A well-fitting riding hat is essential, along with hat accessories and a hat bag. When jumping, riding cross-country or riding young horses, a body protector gives extra protection. Riding in the dark? Then wear reflective gear.

Gloves, whips and spurs

Riding gloves give grip on the reins and prevent blisters. Choose a dressage whip, jumping whip or lunge whip, and find spurs with matching spur straps.

Show clothing

For competitions you need a show jacket, show shirt and show breeches. Complete your outfit with a stock, hairnet and show gloves.

Frequently asked questions about riding clothing and equipment

About riding clothing and safety

Knee grip or full seat grip: which suits me?

Knee grip sits only on the inside of the knee and gives more freedom of movement, which is why show jumpers often choose it. Full seat grip continues over the seat and gives extra hold in the saddle, making it popular in dressage. For leisure riding, both work well.

How do I choose the right size breeches?

Breeches fit differently from brand to brand. Measure your waist and hips and compare them with the size chart on the product page. Breeches should fit snugly without pinching, so no creases form between your leg and the saddle.

When should I replace my riding hat?

Always replace your riding hat after a fall or hard knock, even if you can't see any damage: the protective layer may be damaged on the inside. Manufacturers also often advise replacing a riding hat after about five years. When buying, look for a current safety standard, such as VG1 01.040 or EN 1384.

Do I need a body protector?

A body protector protects your back and ribs in a fall. It is strongly recommended for jumping, riding cross-country and riding young horses, and compulsory for the cross-country phase in eventing. Choose a model tested to EN 13158, preferably level 3.

How do I measure my riding boot size?

As well as your shoe size, your calf width and leg height matter. Measure your calf at its widest point and the height from the floor to the back of your knee, ideally wearing breeches and riding socks. New leather boots often drop a few centimetres once they are broken in.

What should I wear for a dressage or show jumping competition?

The usual outfit is a dark show jacket, a white or light show shirt with a stock or collar, white or light breeches, riding boots or jodhpur boots with half chaps, gloves and a riding hat. Always check your federation's competition rules for the latest requirements.
